There is a common misunderstanding—often unconscious—that the spiritual path can be approached on our own terms. That we can keep one foot in the known, one foot in the comfort of our identity, and still walk through the fire of transformation. That we can somehow bargain with freedom, soften its edge, make it more palatable.
But the truth is, freedom does not negotiate.
You may try to fit awakening into the framework of your preferences, your ideas, your timing. You may hope that the path of truth will make room for your conditions: I want to awaken, but I don’t want to lose control. I want to know peace, but I don’t want to face my pain. I want to be free, but not if it costs me everything I’ve built.
These inner contracts are subtle. They hide beneath spiritual aspirations and noble intentions. But as long as they are operating, there will be suffering. Because freedom cannot enter where resistance still rules.
The spiritual path—if it is authentic—demands everything. It is not cruel, but it is merciless in its invitation. It will dismantle what you think you are. It will strip away your defenses, expose your hidden bargains, and burn through the illusions you’ve carefully maintained.
This is not punishment. This is love.
Love does not collude with the ego’s strategies. It does not reinforce the walls you’ve built to protect yourself. It invites you into a deeper intimacy with what is—an intimacy so total, it leaves no room for negotiation.
There comes a moment on the path when you realize: I cannot go further unless I give everything. Not physically, not externally—but inwardly. The whole edifice of “me” must be surrendered.
Until that moment, the path is filled with tension. The push and pull of wanting truth, but fearing the cost. The longing for stillness, but clinging to the drama. The desire for oneness, but preserving division.
But when you stop trying to control your awakening—when you stop trying to fit it into your life, and instead allow your life to be transformed by it—something opens.
A deeper trust emerges. Not a passive surrender, but an alive willingness to meet life as it is. You stop bargaining with reality and start bowing to it. And in that bow, in that total yes, the path becomes clear—not easy, but unmistakable.
There is no spiritual path without cost. But what is lost is only that which was never truly you. And what is revealed is peace, depth, and a love that has no opposite.
Don’t wait for the path to become more comfortable. It won’t.
Don’t wait for freedom to adjust to your schedule. It won’t.
Come as you are—but come with everything.
This is the cost. And this is the gift.
