THE PARADOX OF BEING IN THE WORLD BUT NOT OF THE WORLD
There seems to be a battle in spiritual circles. There are those who hold dearly to the view that awakening elevates us above the human experience to some lofty place where nothing can touch us. And there are those who vehemently rail against the truth of freedom from self-identity and claim this is spiritual bypassing.
The thing is, true freedom is a paradox. It is neither a denial of our human-ness in the name of "enlightenment" nor a reveling in the mire of drama and trauma that is part of the matrix of conditioning. The paradox is something the mind cannot comprehend. It can only be known in the direct experience and embodiment of it.
True freedom is the humility to experience every facet of being human, the wide open experiencing of the exquisite agony of earthly life, whilst not deriving any self-identity from this experience. It is neither denial nor resignation. It is neither avoidance nor being lost. It is being absolutely found in the truth of our being-ness. There is no battle in this, no opposition, no division. It is a true knowing of that which we are as open awareness. And this open awareness is inseparable from everything we experience.
My invitation is for you to BE in the world, but not be OF the world. It is a profound transformation of consciousness. One that returns you right back to where you are, yet pulls the platform of ego-self right out from under your feet. It is a total spiritual revolution, an inner light that can never be extinguished. And yet you are just as human as you were, and the earthly journey continues according to its own trajectory. You are both fully alive as the unique individuation that you are, yet you have died as the psychological knot of separation you once thought you were. It is both the beginning and the end. You are both everything and nothing.
What a great mystery this is, my friend!
