ARE WE AWAKENING?
Someone asked me the other day if I thought there is a collective awakening happening. My answer is both yes and no (you know I love the paradoxical nature of truth!).
On the one hand, there is a very potent opportunity for transformation of consciousness at this current time on planet earth. The egoic paradigm has reached a tipping point, it can no longer sustain itself. Fear, panic, drama have intensified to the point that the human mind-body system is likely to deteriorate if it grabs onto this fear and drama and lives from the position-taking defended-ness of the ego's structure. And those worldly structures that are built on the ego's scaffolding - those structures built on greed and corruption and "power over" - will also inevitably come tumbling down (they already are). The system (whether it be the body-mind or the society) cannot thrive when we reach a tipping point of stress. We are at that threshold now, or coming close to it. So what does this mean?
It means that it's at the darkest hour, the point of maximum stress, that we have a potential breakthrough. In other words, we either devolve ... or we evolve. On a personal level, this means we may awaken out of the dream of ego-identity. We may see that thought-based fear is a cancer and we may realize that going within to the source of Being is what will cut through the many obscurations of mind that create our so-called "world". And this is happening ... more and more people are awakening all around the world. More and more people are breaking free of the matrix of thought and the addiction to the drama of the phenomenal world.
Does this mean the whole world will awaken? I don't think so. There are many who are not going to make this evolutionary leap ... the internal conditions are not yet ripe. Does it matter? Again, in one way yes and in one way no. It matters to the human heart that sees human suffering. But from the viewpoint of the one Being that we all share and from which we all arise, the individual waves are not the issue. The ocean is coming to know itself though the waves ... it is the totality that is waking up to itself. Of course, the more waves that realize their own true nature as the ocean - and also realize that there is no individual wave to own that true nature! - the more the totality awakens.
So each of us is exactly where we are. And it cannot be any other way. There is a deep acceptance in this, an allowing of the evolutionary momentum. It is not about having to save the whole world or to convince every individuation (individual) of the truth of its depth of Being. It's about each of us (as individuals) holding the inner line, in our deepest, of presence and openness ... when the tempest rages, when the storm pulls everything apart, when all inner and outer phenomena appear as monsters out to destroy us. It's about being the still-point ... knowing the true nature of "I" as awareness itself. And awareness is always untainted by phenomena. Awareness is the groundless ground from which we can live from life's intelligence and respond rather than react. Awareness is the freedom we seek. And it is always available to us, right here, right now. It's the most intimate experience ... because awareness has never left us, not for a moment.
This is not about living in hope of some kind of mass awakening. This is about each of us taking responsibility for holding the inner line, of remaining as presence and openness in all circumstances. Awareness as the bare fact of being is always here. It is the background of all that appears, all that is happening, all phenomenal displays. But phenomena (thoughts, feelings, events, forms, etcetera) all come and go ... awareness does not.
You ARE that awareness.
All you need to do is stop and look within ... and know thyself.
